| |  HEF encourages proposals from all areas of the curriculum, but like the Acorn Grants, Seedling Grants must contain an element of literacy development. The same application is used for Seedling Grants as for Acorn Grants. A Rubric is available to assist in writing and evaluating grant proposals.  Eight Seedling Grants totaling $12,269.63 are being carried out during the 2010-11 School Year.
10-S-1 Hess Elementary - Katie Pieta "Tumble Book Library" Second grade students will gain fluency and comprehension through the use of an online library. They will be able to hear fluent reading, make connections through animated graphics, and take quizzes to monitor reading comprehension.
10-S-2 Irving Elementary - Mary Moriarty, Melissa Tatalovich, Dawn Veenstra, Tracy Dragos "Engaging Literature to Increase Reading Levels" Fourth graders will increase their reading level by reading high interest periodicals geared toward their age level and featuring both fiction and non-fiction texts in the multidisciplinary areas of Reading, Social Studies, Science, and Math.
10-S-3 Lafayette Elementary - Iris Comer-Day, Michelle Clifford, Karen Csigas, Jessica Doyle, Kimberly Musch, Melissa Rhodes, Cheryl Jones "Kindergarten Alphabet Intervention" In an effort to increase adequate knowledge of the alphabet, the kindergarten team will use Level A readers to provide intervention to kindergarten students who are not making adequate progress in letter recognition.
10-S-4 Maywood Elementary - Cynthia Cruz "Where in the World" All grade level students will use globes to increase map skills and to identify continents and countries during their library session, thus reinforcing lessons learned in their individual classrooms.
10-S-5 Wallace Elementary - Tami Smolen, Chris Kiepura, Michelle Mason Yonan "First Grade Fluency Fun" First graders will use Tag school readers to enhance fluency, phonemic awareness, word recognition, comprehension and vocabulary during daily literacy station sessions. The Tag readers are simple pen-like devices that allow students to read and hear stories on headphones.
10-S-6 Eggers Middle School - Vickie Thomas "Three Cups of Tea" Students will be inspired to read more after reading and discussing Greg Mortenson's "Three Cups of Tea", an inspirational book about how the author started several schools for girls in war-torn Afghanistan.
10-S-7 Clark Middle/High School - Georgann Ziemniak "Buddy-Up with Books" This multi-level project begins with Clark freshmen reading two books or their choosing with a freshman buddy. After creating a multi-media marketing campaign for their books, they will then "sell" their books to students in grades 6 through 12 at a book fair.
10-S-8 Clark High School - Jessica Pramuk $1600.00 (Funded with Science for Success money) S.C.A.L.P.E.L. - Students Can Apply Laboratory Principles Enabling Learning" Dissecting a fetal pig provides a unique experience that is vital for biology students to learn the human anatomy. Dissection provides a perspective that cannot be viewed by text and diagrams alone.
