Acorn Grants
Type A Acorn Grants are funds given to the regular classroom teacher who wants to do an exciting program with his or her students but needs financial assistance to carry it out. These projects were selected in December 2009 and carried out in the remainder of the school year.

A-1 Clark High School - "Etiquette 101"

This project will expose the freshmen in the KoZ team to the behavior and mores expected of them at a formal situation. A five-course dinner will be created, catered, and served by the students in the nutrition and wellness class.

A-2 Hammond High - "Hey Parthenon! It's Greek to Me!"

Students in this combined math and art project will research and illustrate the mathematical formulas related to the temple construction, after which they will create a visual that illustrates the columns of the Parthenon.

A-3 Hammond High - "Senior/2nd Year Freshmen Mentoring Program"

This program will target freshman students who are in desperate need of intervention to help them succeed in school. With student centered literacy activities led by senior students, the freshmen will become engaged and successful in their work.

This project will provide English/Spanish books to facilitate parents reading to their kindergarten children. Spanish speaking parents will be able to read nightly with their children, helping them to lengthen attention span, increase vocabulary, and stimulate thinking.

A-6 Irving Elementary - "Staff Spelling"

Students in 1st through 5th grade music class will use the staff to improve letter recognition and letter sounds. After learning to read the note names on the music staff, they will write stories that include words that can be written on the staff.

A-7 Kenwood Elementary - "There's Only One 'Good' Planet, and It's All Ours!"

All Kenwood students will participate in a recycling program designed to encourage exploration of environmental issues that are contributing to global warming. When they understand the importance of reducing our carbon footprint, they will take steps to ensure a viable planet for future generations.

A-9 O'Bannon Elementary - "Book Nook"
