Proposal Example

This is an example of a very well-written, concise proposal submitted by Mary Moriarty, teacher at Irving Elementary.

Types of Grants
Acorn Grants are awarded at the end of the fall and are carried out during the spring. They usually involve one or two classrooms and are funded in the $500 to $1000 range. Acorn Grants fund innovative projects in classrooms for which funding is not otherwise available.

Seedling Grants are awarded in spring and are carried out during the following school year. They generally involve a large section of the school population and range from $1000 to $3000. HEF usually funds two to four Seedling Grants each year.

Items Funded
Applicants may receive funds for materials, supplies, and other items necessary to carry out their projects. Specialized educational trips and guest speakers will be considered only if they are an integral part of the proposed program. Stipends for teachers, food, items of little instructional value, and equipment that is provided for in the SCH Technology Plan are not funded. HEF Grant projects may be renewed or expanded up to two times, but funds are not granted to sustain ongoing programs.

Application Process
The HEF Grant Application is short and easy to complete. It can be downloaded using the link to the left of this page or obtained as a PDF document by e-mailing hef@hammond.k12.in.us. Also provided is a rubric that can be used to help develop the program narrative.

For the next Acorn Grant cycle, send a hard copy of the application to the Hammond Education Foundation, 41 Williams Street, Hammond, IN 46320, by 4:00 p.m. on October, 2010.

Evaluation Process
All complete proposals will be reviewed by the HEF Grants Committee, which includes representatives from the educational, business and civic sectors of the community. Proposals will be evaluated according to the Grant Rubric, and teachers will be informed within three weeks of the due date whether their project will be funded. The successful applicant will be required to sign and return to the HEF a contract requiring the applicant to execute the proposed project. A check will then be issued to the teacher/school to be deposited into an extracurricular account. The recipient shall submit a written report after the conclusion of the project, but not later than June 1.
